Kothi to Rahala Waterfall
Continuing the drive, you reach the majestic Rahala Falls, located approximately 16 km from Manali at an altitude of 2,501 meters. This stunning cascade is formed by melting glaciers, resulting in crystal-clear, icy waters that plunge down rocky cliffs amidst a lush forest of silver birch and deodar trees.
Rahala Waterfall to Marhi
The drive from the mist-covered Rahala Falls toward the mountain settlement of Marhi marks a dramatic transition in the Himalayan landscape. Arriving at Marhi, situated at an elevation of approximately 3,300 meters, you are greeted by vast, rolling alpine meadows that serve as the final pitstop before the Rohtang summit. Known for its vibrant roadside eateries and spectacular panoramic vistas, Marhi offers travelers a chance to acclimatize while surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks.
Marhi to Rohtang Pass
The final ascent from Marhi to Rohtang Pass is the crowning glory of the tour, where the landscape shifts from alpine meadows to a high-altitude wonderland of rock and ice. Rising to a majestic elevation of 3,978 meters, this stretch of the Manali-Leh Highway is a masterpiece of mountain engineering, featuring steep climbs and dramatic curves that offer adrenaline-pumping views at every turn. As you approach the "Gateway to Lahaul and Spiti," the air turns crisp and the lush greenery gives way to the stark, magnificent beauty of the Pir Panjal Range. The reach to Rohtang Pass is an unforgettable milestone for every traveler.
Rohtang Pass to Kokksar
Descending from the heights of Rohtang Pass toward Kokksar, you will witness one of the most dramatic climatic and visual shifts in the Himalayas. Kokksar, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,140 meters, serves as the first village of Lahaul and is often called the "coldest place in the region". This charming settlement is a vital link on the Leh-Manali Highway, characterized by its traditional stone houses, prayer flags fluttering in the wind and a stark, majestic backdrop of towering, barren peaks. It is the perfect spot to experience the transition from Hindu culture to the Buddhist-influenced heritage of the high desert.
Kokksar to Atal Tunnel
Drive from Kokksar to Atal Tunnel. The Atal Tunnel is a 9.02 km long engineering masterpiece that has fundamentally changed the travel landscape of North India. It holds the record as the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). By cutting through the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, it bypasses the treacherous Rohtang Pass, turning what was once a 4- to 5-hour dangerous climb into a safe 30-minute drive.
Atal Tunnel to Solang Valley
As you exit the Atal Tunnel, you are greeted once again by the lush, verdant landscapes of the Kullu Valley, drive toward Solang Valley.
